Transport
Vor Frelsers Kirke is located just a few minutes’ walk from Christianshavn Metro Station.
Bus 2A also stops right by the church’s side entrance.
Visit the tower
The iconic tower of Vor Frelsers Kirke, completed in 1752, is one of Copenhagen’s most distinctive landmarks and a masterpiece of Danish Late Baroque architecture. The elegant spiral spire with its external winding staircase rises above Christianshavn and can be seen from large parts of the city.
The tower was added more than 50 years after the church was consecrated in 1696 and was designed by the architect Lauritz de Thurah, who drew inspiration from the great European Baroque architecture of his time. With its gilded details, dramatic spiral form, and panoramic views of Copenhagen, the tower has long served both as a symbol of the church and as a striking landmark for sailors, residents, and visitors alike.
The climb through the winding tower consists of 400 steps leading through narrow wooden passageways. The final 150 steps are located on the outside of the spire, where, at a height of 86 metres, you will experience one of Copenhagen’s finest panoramic views stretching in every direction.
The tower houses six impressive church bells as well as an exquisite carillon consisting of 48 bells. The carillon holds great significance for the local community of Christianshavn, and its melodies can be heard daily throughout the neighbourhood.

In the event of rain, snow, or strong winds, the Tower may be temporarily closed for safety reasons.

We recommend booking in advance here on our website using the calendar above or via Billetto.dk due to the tower’s limited capacity and high number of visitors. By booking in advance, you can secure a place in the tower at your preferred date and time.
If you arrive without a ticket during busy periods, please note that our tower staff may require you to book online in order to gain access to the tower.
The following periods are typically the busiest:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday: approximately 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Access to the tower is only possible via 400 steps. The first half of the climb takes place inside the tower, where visitors should be aware of the narrow and steep staircases before reaching the external spiral staircase.
For this reason, the tower has a limited capacity, and we recommend booking in advance as we welcome many visitors each day.
We also kindly ask all visitors to be considerate of one another while using the narrow staircases.
Kids are welcomed in the tower accompanied by an adult.

For safety reasons, the tower closes during periods of rain or strong winds. As the copper steps become slippery when wet, they must dry before the tower can reopen.
